THE BIKERS TRAGEDY - #CarnivalCalabar #Calabarfestival

The Calabar Festival has become a world class brand with the #CarnivalCalabar and other events aired live on Channel 199 DSTV.

The just concluded 2013 Calabar Festival had its own share of intrigues one of them been the much awaited Brazilians and also the star acts scheduled to perform such as Dbanj, 2face, Banky W, MI and a host of others highly celebrated Nigerian artists.

On the day of the #CarnivalCalabar ,27th Dec something happened about some minutes to noon.
For those who attended the 2012 #CalabarFestival there was an event called 'Hot Wheels' ,a power bike display blended with performances from dance groups, the event had a lot of daring power bike stunts and was a delight to watch with no casualties and also on a day that had only an evening show at the stadium on the programme line up.

Unfortunately in 2013 the bikers took to the streets of Calabar on Carnival day irrespective of a Government restrain ordering the bikers not to do the stunt display on that day and at noon not long after there 2000+ cc engines hit the concrete one of the bikers crashed at Efete Junction......Tragedy struck....

Because the entire city was on a carnival lock down this news did not spread till 24hrs after the incident and when the news broke we all heard that the crash had been fatal and the biker DEAD.
Then the rumors started going round of a political reason for the Government not approving the stunt display and that Ex-Governor Donald Duke was part of the bikers and what not and what ifs...

To cut the long story short phones started buzzing as reporters started looking for gossip stories and eventually after several calls to relevant authorities and even the Biker club we found out that the Government had prohibited the Bikers club from having a display on that day citing the fact that the carnival will be a busy day with all round coordination across the 12km route giving the bikers no room to have a good display considering it a fast sport.

Somehow Some way the Bikers went ahead intending to continue with the display despite the Government restrain order, after all how can you stop a fast moving power bike...Now It is quite unfortunate that a life has been lost. It is important that in 2014 all intending stake holders and also the Government should extensively define their rules of engagement especially with individuals and philanthropic groups.

I personally enjoyed the Bikers stunts in 2012 and looked forward to it in 2013. In 2014 it must be on a less busy day #CalabarFestival #CarnivalCalabar is too big a brand to have any distraction. The Bikers can do something special as a tribute to their comrade this year. It would be touching to see that.

Some people might have a different opinion, This is just the Gospel Truth!!!
